Valentines Gift Shopping at Bullring

Valentines Day is fast approaching, and I’m sure I can’t be the only one who isn’t completely prepared! Thankfully, the lovely folks at the Bullring in Birmingham invited me along to spend the afternoon shopping for V-day gifts with Dan, to see what they had to offer.

I think we’re both fairly easy to please when it comes to romantic gifts – basically, I’m happy with anything colourful or sparkly, and the more cheesily romantic the better! After all, you’re talking to the girl who insists on wearing red or pink every year when we go out, just to make sure I’m on theme! For Dan, as I’m sure is the case with many men, the way to his heart is undoubtedly through his stomach, and I knew that there would be plenty of places within the Bullring where I’d be able to find him something tasty! Friday Five – Valentines 2016 with Vivien of Holloway

Long time followers of this blog will know that I love to dream up a super cutesy outfit around Valentines Day – you can see my previous efforts here – so when Vivien of Holloway contacted me to create a wishlist from their gorgeous, retro offerings, the theme I would pick seemed obvious!

This Valentines day we’re keeping things fairly low key as we’re now knee-deep in wedding planning, but I do still love taking time out to celebrate (especially as V-day is pretty well timed for the end of Dan’s busiest time of the year with work, when we don’t get to spend a lot of time together) so we’ll be heading out to a local restaurant that we’ve been meaning to try for a while. Here’s what I’d love to be wearing…

As soon as I spotted this heart print dress, I knew the outfit had to be based around it! I adore the full skirt, and cap sleeves that make it not too revealing/chilly for this time of year, but you could always pop a little red or white cardigan over it. I also think the lip shaped clutch adds some extra fun to the outfit, and could happily be used throughout the year (red features fairly heavily in my wardrobe no matter the season), and what else should a girl wear in her hair on this most romantic of days other than roses?! (and these will cost a darn site less than a bouquet, and last a lot longer!) I’d finish off the outfit with some sparkly heart earrings (which are an absolute bargain!) and, of course, a super floofy (can’t think of a better word!) petticoat for extra romantic twirling potential. You know, in case there’s some impromptu romantic dancing involved!!!

Those of you heading out this valentines day, do you have your outfit planned? Are you going super cutesy and v-day themed, or maybe something more sultry and chic? Let me know in the comments!

Clad in Plaid & Mary Janes from CLOGGS

Mary Janes are a pretty staple kind of shoe for me – I adore the cute ankle strap, and they invariably come with a blocky heel that makes them smart yet comfortable when I’m in the studio or styling at events (honestly, I never thought I’d become a ‘comfortable shoes’ type of person, but it’s amazing what being on your feet all day will do!) In my recent great annual wardrobe clear out I had to bin my much-loved tan Mary Janes, a sad, sad day but they really were past saving.  The fact that they were so worn out tells a tale as to how much they were worn, and also the giant, gaping hole they left in my shoe wardrobe!

So, I was incredibly pleased when CLOGGS contacted me to ask if I’d like to review a pair of Hush Puppies, and I spotted this gorgeous, tan, T-bar pair.

It was obviously fate! I loved the double strap detail, and the mix of croc and plain leathers. Of course, being Hush Puppies I also knew that they would be super comfortable. Off went my order, and the postman swiftly delivered! In person I was just as pleased. The detailing was as lovely as it looked on the site, and also the heels had an unusual round / cylinder shape that I hadn’t noticed but think is fab! All the comfort of a block heel, but with a little more interest. And on the comfort theme, the insoles are lined with a bouncy cushion, meaning that I’ve worn these all day in the studio whilst styling with no achy feet issues. An added benefit at this time of year is some grip on the soles. I hate being that woman sliding about in the Winter in unsuitable shoes!

I teamed my new Hush Puppies with a recent (ish!) purchase from Lindybop. I’d heard lots of good things about this online purveyor of retro fashion, and when I spotted this plaid dress in their sale at the end of last year I thought it would be a good excuse to give them a try! Teamed with red it made the perfect Christmas Day dress, but I’m now enjoying picking out the browns and blues from the tartan fabric as I take it through into Spring. For the, quite frankly ridiculous, purchase price of £16.99 (and they still have lots of sizes in stock!) I’m really pleased with the quality – it even came with the matching belt. I’ll definitely be making more purchases in the future.

Critics Choice Awards 2016 Red Carpet Roundup

Another week, another red carpet, it must be awards season! Next up is the Critics Choice Awards, which showed us some lovely looks on their powder blue carpet (hey, it was a nice change from red!). The Critics Choice Awards Red Carpet can be a little more subdued and laid back after the glamour of the Golden Globes, but there were still some colourful treats to be seen!

Again, of course, I’m most interested in the colour trends, and there were many, many black gowns that didn’t make it onto my favourites list as none of them seemed quite special enough to me. The one exception was Alice Vikander’s beaded Mary Katrantzou gown, which was a bit of a risky / edgy one, but a risk that really paid off. The black gown with dark beading looked amazing with Alice’s deep, strong colouring. [Read more…]

Where Did You Get That Hat?

I have a very big head. No seriously. People laugh at me when I say it, but it makes buying hats a real issue! I love hats, and truly believe that accessories make or break an outfit. At this time of year a good hat can be the difference between feeling the chill or being sheltered from the drizzle. But, due to my aforementioned large-head-itis (it makes alice bands a right faff too, constantly snapping them in the middle as they stretch over my noggin!) you’ll generally see me in a stretchy knitted beret or beany, whilst I lust after all of the gorgeous 70s floppy brimmed numbers, cloches and fedoras.

I’ve been on the lookout for a navy, structured hat for a while. I had spotted this oversize fedora with gold band in Topshop, but didn’t really pay it too much attention as it was ‘one size’ – generally a no-go for me! But after many a navy hat disappointment, including an ASOS size ‘L’ that had to be returned after it was obviously not going to be jammed on my head, I thought I’d give this one a go whilst passing by Toppers in the Bullring on my way back from a meeting.

And guess what… it fits! [Read more…]

Golden Globes Red Carpet Roundup 2016

So, we’re kicking off 2016 on the blog with the first of our big red carpet events of the year, the Golden Globes. Honestly, I adore red carpet season so much, it’s always a pleasure to see the amazing colours and gowns worn by the talented women involved.

My list may look a little different to other ‘best dressed lists’, because of course I can’t help but concentrate on colour, and how good the gown looks on the woman wearing it. I can see the most spectacular gown, but if it doesn’t make the women wearing it look amazing (or simply overshadows her which is possibly the number one risk with red carpet fashion) then it just can’t go on my list.

So, what did I love at the Golden Globes 2016?

I loved the trend towards navy, sapphire and airforce blue as seen on Gina Rodriguez, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Julianne Moore, and Kate Winslet who looked particularly stunning in Ralph Lauren. Kate Winslet tends to choose black gowns which can overpower her soft colouring – don’t get me wrong, she always looks amazing, but the blue colour really makes her shine. Also, I just think that black is a bit of an easy option at these events, and it has to be a completely amazing black dress, on someone with the right deep colouring to really make an impact.

I also loved Saoirse Ronan and Lily James in etherial ivory, Amy Adams making the most of her warm colouring in sunset orange. A couple that found themselves on a few ‘worst’ lists this year make my faves – Cate Blanchette in pale pink, tasselled Givenchy, who personally I think has the dramatic, striking personality and style to pull off something so unusual, and the pastel colour is awesome with her light colouring. Secondly, Portia Doubleday in a silver, mirrored number from Naeem Khan, which has been compared to a ‘disco ball’. Erm, sorry, disco balls are amazing, who wouldn’t want to look like one? I love the quirkiness of this dress and think the silver looks lovely on her. But hey, that’s the joy of fashion, it’s all subjective!

See you in 2016!

Screen Shot 2015-12-12 at 18.28.39Hello lovely colourful types, just a quick post today to let you know that I’m now going on my Christmas break! Woohoo! I’ll be back blogging and the styling studio will be open again from the 4th January.

In the meantime I wish you all a very colourful Christmas, and a super sparkly New Year!

(And if you find yourself missing me too much, I will no doubt still be tweeting, instagramming and snapchatting (emilyjayneimage) my way through this festive period!)

Bullring Christmas Bloggers Event

emily jayne bullring christmas bloggersDone all your Christmas shopping? Nope? Me either!! (For those of you who smugly said ‘yup’, think of all the last minute excitement you’re missing out on! Nope? Rather not run around in a frenzy of festive stress? Fair enough.)

But anyhoo, for those who, like me, need a little last minute Christmas Gift inspiration, the lovely folks at the Bullring ran an event last week for a handful of Brum bloggers to showcase some of their festive offerings!

Fab nibbles and some rather spectacular looking cocktails were provided by Chi Kitchen. I’ve not visited this new Pan-Asian restaurant in Debenhams yet, but it’s now definitely on my list of places to try – in fact it was difficult to tear myself away from the buffet and chatting and catching up with some of my fave bloggy types to go and look at the lovely gift ideas! The Clothes Show 2015

clothes show 2015 8

The Clothes Show at Birmingham’s NEC is undoubtedly one of the biggest fashion events of the year. It’s certainly a bit of an institution – I have many happy memories of visiting on school trips (one of the advantages of doing a textiles GCSE!) and through into my 20s, hoping to bag a bargain or bump into a designer that I loved (and of course, always hearing the stories of models and presenters who were ‘spotted’ by agencies at the show, not something I ever expected to happen to me, but certainly added a level of glamour to the whole occasion, especially for a teen growing up in a suburban town just outside Birmingham, where it seemed impossible that anything glamorous would ever happen.)
