Super Cleanser. Rubbish Packaging.
Back when I made my January Skincare/Beauty Products video (and yup, there is a February one coming, I just can’t bare to make it until this cold is fully out of my system and I look/feel/sound a little less horrific!) I promised to do a proper review of the Una Brennan Super Facialist Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil (phew, rather a mouthful of a name, eh?)
I introduced this oil after finishing off my last trusty pot of cold cream, that I had been using as a first cleanse (yup, first cleanse. If you’re wearing makeup or SPF, you really should be cleansing twice – once to take off the makeup, and once to properly cleanse the skin. I started doing this after reading the recommendation on Caroline Hirons blog and it has made such a difference!)
So, using an oil on blemish-prone skin – sounds counterproductive but I learned a long time ago that my spots have nothing to do with oily skin, and everything do to with hormones, being run down, and my skin being dehydrated. Therefore, the more I nourish and treat my skin, the better it is – which kind of makes sense, but believe me, it took a long time for me to get there! The first thing you notice about this oil is the scent – it is a big, pow, orangey scent that you will either love or hate. Fortunately I love it, and the orange scent lingers on my skin throughout cleansing and moisturising – it’s really lovely to go to bed with a nice smelling face!
You apply the oil to a dry face with dry hands, and massage it in. This is wear the magic happens – you can literally see your makeup practically flying away from your face and being caught up in the oil. I’m yet to find anything it can’t shift, including waterproof mascara and eyeliner (and I know this isn’t recommended for use on the eyes, but I’ve had no problems, which means I don’t have to use a separate eye makeup remover – less steps = less time in front of the mirror washing my face for me every night = more sleep time = woop!). I then use a flannel and hot water to remove the oil from my face. I have tried this without the flannel (when they have all been in the wash!) and it really doesn’t work as well – I was left with a slight oily film on my face.
My skin is left feeling clear of makeup, soft and like it’s had a bit of a treat – result! I’m nearly done with my first bottle (although it has lasted very well – this is from 2 months use) and will definitely be repurchasing. I have also had much, much clearer skin since introducing this to my skincare routine, which I think must be to do with the combination of vitamin C, and actually, properly, getting my face clean at night!
My only bugbear with this fabulous product is the packaging. IT IS RUBBISH! Don’t get me wrong, it looks very pretty on my bathroom shelf, but when you open the white, twist off lid, there is just a large ‘bottle’ style opening, which means you have to pour the oil out onto your hands, and it’s almost impossible to control. Every night I end up using far more than I need to, and the oil then also runs down the side of the bottle leaving a nice oily ‘pool’ around it on my shelf. Urgh.
This was so frustrating that I couldn’t quite believe it was true and wondered if I had somehow ended up with a defective bottle. Unfortunately a bit of googling has shown that it’s not, and I’m not the only one who has ended up with this problem. The bottle really does need either a ‘toner’ style cap in it so that you can pour it out a few drops at a time, or a pump so you can administer it properly without it going everywhere. I’m thinking of decanting my next bottle into a cheap pump travel bottle, which should solve the problem so it’s such a shame to have to do this.
But to end on a positive note – the fact that I’ll be repurchasing this despite how annoying the packaging is should prove how much I love this product!
